City Air Valve

Function and Purpose

The primary purpose of a city air valve is to manage air within pipelines to maintain optimal flow, pressure, and system integrity.

  • Air Release: It prevents air from accumulating at high points in the pipeline, which can form air pockets (airlocks) that block flow and increase pumping energy consumption.
  • Vacuum Protection: It admits large volumes of air into the pipe when pressure drops suddenly (e.g., during draining or a power failure) to prevent negative pressure (vacuum) that could cause the pipe to collapse.
  • System Protection: By managing air and pressure fluctuations, it helps protect pumps, valves, and flow meters from damage caused by air hammer (pressure surges) and reduces internal pipe corrosion.

  • Automatic Air Release Valves: These have a small orifice and continuously release small, accumulated air pockets from a pressurized line.
  • Air and Vacuum Valves: Also known as vacuum breakers, these have a large orifice and discharge or admit large volumes of air primarily during the filling or draining of a pipeline.
  • Combination Air Valves: These incorporate both functions within a single or dual body design, providing comprehensive air management by releasing small air pockets under pressure and allowing large air intake/discharge during filling/draining
