Air Release Valve
Function and Operation
The primary function of a PP air release valve is to manage air within a pressurized system to ensure smooth operation and prevent issues like air pockets (airlocks) and water hammer.
- Air Discharge During Filling: When a pipeline is being filled, the valve remains open, allowing surplus air to be expelled at a high flow rate. Once the pipe is full of water, a float inside the valve rises and seals the orifice tightly.
- Continuous Air Release: During system operation, small pockets of air naturally accumulate at high points in the pipeline. The float will drop as air gathers, opening a small orifice to release the air. When the air is purged, the water level rises again, and the float re-seals the valve.
- Vacuum Relief: The valve also provides positive vacuum relief when the pipe is draining or if a negative pressure condition occurs (e.g., column separation). This function prevents the pipeline from collapsing due to sudden changes in pressure.
